The Day Jenny Came to Stay

Words and Music by John Wolfe Compton

I’m feeling so depressed
It’s seems my minds an awful mess
The girl I love, she cried
She tried her best
It don’t do much good
To confess

I wrote her a poem one night
In hopes to stop her flight
Before I could read it to her
She turned out the light
And I just did not say it right

And now I’m all alone
And a wretched sight
So please, please, please, please
Have pity on me and
Just stay with me tonight

She said that Jenny was her name
And she’d been hurt just the same
And as I pulled my chair closer to her
I said it was a shame
And isn’t life just like
A losing game

I pulled out my last dollar bill
As she gazed blankly at the window sill
I said it was nice to meet her,
But she cried out still
Stay awhile
If you will

She said I’m all alone
And I am a wretched sight
So please, please, please, please
Have pity on me and
Just stay with me tonight

Well it’s 10 years to the day
That Jenny came to stay
And I am glad, oh Lord I am so glad
That that evil woman went away
