Brown Eyed Emily
By John Compton
Singing in the canyon
To the moon and the trees
Singing to the fire
That’s the life for me
But for all the happy times
Out wandering free
I never forgot my one sweet girl
Brown eyed Emily
So one day I rambled home
And back out to the West
To where I left my dear girl
When she layed down for a rest
So I begged the barman, could I play a tune
One he could sing along
He just smiled and shook his head
And said, “Hello John”
Wore out as a ghost
I had a few rhymes on my tongue
Got my guitar slung across my back
But a thirst to go along
So into the nights’ smoky noise
I sang out to my girl
But soon bar room cleared to one
Smiling beneath her curls
She took my money from the night
And lit my cigar,
Poured me whisky, and kissed and kissed me
In her room above the bar
And as I held her tight, I smiled
And said happily
You’ve got eyes just like my girl
